Health Hints are a quick, easy way to provide health education to your congregation. They can be placed in the Sunday bulletin and I find most people read them. The information should come from reliable sources and sited if it isn’t common knowledge.

Health Hints:
January 2009

Health Hints:  Beta-cryptozanthin is a unique anti-cancer nutrient.  It can be found in sweet red peppers, oranges, peaches and papaya.  Studies show that high levels of it in your bloodstream can reduce your risk of lung cancer.  Try using these foods for snacks!

Health Hints: Dry Mouth is a side effect of more than 400 medications.  For relief, sip water or milk; avoid alcohol, caffeine, and tobacco; and keep gum or hard candies on hand to stimulate saliva production.

Health Hints: Hugging laundry is not good.  Soiled clothing and linens can harbor bacteria and other germs, so use a basket not you arms to gather and transport.  Then remember to wash your hands after loading it into your machine. Preserve your nutrients by microwaving vegetables.

Health Hints: Boiling destroys 15 to 30 % of some of the vitamins in vegetables. Use a microwave-safe dish and just enough water to keep the food from burning (about a teaspoon for two servings) and cover.

Reader Comments:

Thank you so much for your resource that is found on the Presbytery website. I did include your health tips in our newsletter entitled the “Grapevine.”
I did have concerns about the diet soft drink tip, but printed it because I know there are now diet soft drinks that are coming out without aspartame and that there are such high levels of sugar in the soft drinks so many of our parishioners drink. Plus I am aware of those with diabetes that are still craving regular soft drinks. One of our parishioners did email our office with this suggestion which makes sense. Looking up research on this topic on the internet, I also see that the articles by health associations maintain that no artificial sweetener is recommended because it is too early  to tell their side effects and that none of the diet drinks actually curb obesity. I appreciate your article and my parishioner’s for encouraging us to ask questions of our diets. Thank you for being a resource for our congregations.

As I was reading the Grapevine today & in the section, Healthy Hints, I notice that the parish nurse recommended Diet soft drinks instead of Regular soft drinks. Well, with all of the research I have ever read Diet drinks are even WORSE than regular soft drinks. Aspartame is toxic. I don't think we should be promoting diet drinks, they cause ALL kinds of horrible things to happen in our bodies.  Maybe we could say Water or even Green tea, but not diet drinks. I'm sorry, this has bothered my but I can't let the children & adults of the congregation think that is the better choice, when it is NOT. I just wanted to share my concern.
